Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a Chinese tourist visa for a US citizen?
US$185, and that is a flat fee whether you apply for single entry, double entry or a multiple-entry visa. Expedited processing and the application service centre handling charge are extra. Confirm the current figure with the Chinese Embassy in the United States before you pay.
How much is a Chinese visa for Canadians and Australians?
Roughly Can$100 for a Canadian single-entry visa, rising for double and multiple entry. Australians fall under the general schedule, which starts at about US$30 for single entry and about US$90 for a multiple-entry visa valid a year or more. Note that Canadian and Australian passport holders may not need a visa at all under China’s 30-day visa-free policy.
What extra costs are there beyond the visa fee itself?
Three common ones. Expedited service costs more than regular processing. If you file through a China Visa Application Service Centre rather than directly at an embassy, that centre charges its own service fee in local currency. And if you want your passport posted back, you pay return courier. Filing directly at an embassy or consulate means the visa fee only.
How do I pay the Chinese visa fee?
Payment method depends on where you file, and each embassy, consulate and service centre sets its own accepted methods. Check the payment page for the office handling your application before you attend, because a rejected payment method means a wasted appointment.
Do I have to pay for a visa if I qualify for visa-free entry?
No. If your nationality is covered by China’s 30-day unilateral visa-free policy, or you meet the conditions for the 240-hour visa-free transit, there is no visa and no fee. As of September 2026 that includes Canadian, Australian and UK passport holders for the 30-day policy, but not US passport holders, who still need to apply and pay.
